The chief economic courtesan for the Business Roundtable/NZ Initiative suggests increasing the (regressive) goods and services tax to compensate for reducing corporate tax rates. The usual 'look after the wealthy/screw the poor' approach.
Two immediate thoughts: 1. the evidence shows it doesn’t work therefore this government will jump on it. 2. A major report last year showed that a major underpinning of inflation was the profits from large corporates.
Agree with @andrewriddell x look after the wealthy /screw the poor. And sink the middle class even further…
My heart literally dropped when I read the first paragraph, I could not believe what I was reading for the rest of your article. Then I asked myself, what businesses would benefit anyway as there have been so many hitting the wall over the last year, of course big business wins again, my god the corporations sucking NZ dry or our homegrown wealthy and sorted - there is no end to this drive to ruin NZ for the benefit of so few. Thank you for tuning us into the research and the real life examples of the failure yet again of the policies/intentions of this government. Thanks also Andrew Riddell for advising that the heartless greedy bastards in the NZ Initiative have suggested GST as a counter to the loss in govt revenue, we know GST really only impacts the poor. Feeling pretty sad for NZ right now and I am telling all the young people who can - to head for Australia.
Thank you Craig. Your tireless work on this stuff helps to balance the BS pouring from the likes to NZI - they make these spurious claims about economic benefits without providing any evidence.
